Current clinical-study recruitment
About

The Clinical Research Centre of the Medical University of Bialystok comprises six specialised units: the Laboratory of Genomics and Epigenetic Analyses, the Laboratory of Metabolomics, the Personalised Medicine Unit, the Laboratory of Computational Molecular Medicine, the Laboratory of Bioinformatics and Multi-omic Analyses, and the Laboratory of Physical Activity Research. This site is dedicated to the Personalised Medicine Unit.

The Unit brings together specialists from many fields: physicians, laboratory diagnosticians and nurses, as well as biotechnologists, biologists, chemists and dietitians. We combine direct patient care with advanced laboratory analysis, creating a place where research genuinely translates into treatment.

Metabolic chambers on “Dzień Dobry TVN”

The metabolic chambers at the MUB Clinical Research Support Centre were visited by the “Dzień Dobry TVN” crew. They are the first chambers of their kind in Poland and among roughly twenty of this class worldwide. They host patient studies on metabolic diseases – diabetes and obesity.

“The results are very interesting,” Prof. Adam Krętowski, MUB Vice-Rector for digital medicine and clinical research, told journalist Sylwia Cizla. More on the metabolic chambers coming soon on TVN.

Studies in the metabolic chambers have begun

In March 2026, two metabolic chambers were officially opened at the MUB Clinical Research Support Centre – the first research infrastructure of this kind in Poland. They are sealed rooms in which a participant's energy expenditure and metabolism are measured with great precision.

The first measurements are already under way in the chambers, as part of the Unit's ongoing research projects – including studies on diabetes, obesity and the effectiveness of new therapies.

Thank you for taking part in the GAROS project

The Clinical Research Centre team sincerely thanks all patients who took part in the GAROS project. Thanks to your commitment and trust, we gathered an impressive amount of data – 1,100 patients took part in the study.

We are beginning a detailed analysis of the results, which will help us better understand key aspects of health and develop more effective diagnostic and therapeutic methods. We also remind you about follow-up visits – an important part of monitoring the project and your health.

The CRC team at the Polish Diabetes Association Congress

The MUB Clinical Research Centre team took part in the 26th Congress of the Polish Diabetes Association (8–10 May 2025, Kraków). In the Basic Science and Genetics section, Prof. Michał Ciborowski spoke about individualising physical activity as part of precision therapy in type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome (on behalf of Prof. Adam Krętowski), while Dr Łukasz Szczerbiński presented modern precision-medicine approaches to preventing and treating type 2 diabetes.

During the short oral-presentation session, Dr Maciej Szabłowski presented preliminary results from the GAROS study – on the effect of short-term semaglutide treatment on glucose variability (CGM) in patients with prediabetes and obesity.

Research projects

National and international research

The Unit runs numerous national and international projects in cooperation with leading research centres in Poland and worldwide.

PolReD

Stop Diabetes!

The Polish Diabetes Registry – the country's largest registry of patients with diabetes and people at high risk of developing it. Using state-of-the-art molecular methods and artificial intelligence, we search for new ways to prevent diabetes and slow its progression.

GAROS

Genetics of the response to semaglutide treatment

Genetics of the Acute Response to Oral Semaglutide. The project searches for genetic variants associated with the metabolic response to short-term oral semaglutide treatment in patients with obesity and prediabetes.

BBSS

Bialystok Bariatric Surgery Study

One of the first and largest registries of patients undergoing bariatric surgery in Poland. This unique study follows patients for several years after surgery – we investigate the mechanisms of diabetes and obesity remission and build algorithms to predict the response to surgery.

Laboratories and infrastructure

From the patient
to molecular analysis

We have a clinical area designed for working with patients – our own blood-collection points, a procedure room, an anthropometric analysis lab with body-composition analysers and a densitometer, and an exercise-testing lab. We also run an Analytical Laboratory performing immunochemical, biochemical, radioisotope and molecular-biology assays.

Facilities

Our facilities

We combine clinical and analytical work across several specialised facilities – from exercise testing, through metabolic measurements, to molecular and mitochondrial analyses. Each covers a different piece of the same puzzle: understanding how human metabolism works.

Exercise Testing Lab

Exercise tests and ergospirometry (CPET). We assess fitness, gas exchange and the cardiovascular and respiratory response to exercise.

Metabolism Research Lab

Metabolic chambers (WRIC) and resting-metabolism measurement. We study energy expenditure and how the body uses substrates.

Mitochondrial Analysis Lab

High-resolution cellular respiration (Oroboros O2k) and Seahorse XF assays. We assess mitochondrial function and capacity.

Biochemical Analysis Lab

Immunoenzymatic (ELISA/DYNEX) and biochemical assays. Quantitative analysis of biomarkers from blood, urine and tissue.

Body Composition Lab

Densitometry (DXA) and bioimpedance analysis (InBody). Precise measurement of fat, muscle and bone mass.

Molecular Biology Lab

Isolation and analysis of nucleic acids, gene-expression and genetic-variant studies for precision medicine.
