BMI – body mass index

Body mass index (BMI) is the ratio of body weight to height squared. It is used to assess body weight in adults.

Result

—kg/m²

Enter your height and weight.

World Health Organization (WHO) classification for adults. Not applicable in pregnancy; in children and adolescents body weight is assessed using growth charts.

HOMA-IR – insulin resistance index

The HOMA-IR index is used to assess insulin resistance, i.e. reduced sensitivity of tissues to insulin.

Enter your fasting glucose and insulin.

Matthews DR et al., Diabetologia 1985;28:412–419. Formula: glucose [mg/dl] × insulin [µIU/ml] / 405. There is no single universal cut-off – interpretation depends on the population and the insulin assay, so the result should be discussed with a doctor.

FINDRISC – type 2 diabetes risk

The FINDRISC questionnaire is used to assess the 10-year risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Age
Body mass index (BMI)
Sex (for the waist thresholds)
Waist circumference (measured below the ribs, usually at navel level)
Do you do at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day, at work or in your free time?
How often do you eat vegetables, fruit or berries?
Have you ever taken blood pressure medication regularly?
Have you ever been found to have high blood glucose (e.g. in a health check, during an illness or pregnancy)?
Has anyone in your family been diagnosed with diabetes (type 1 or 2)?

WHtR – waist-to-height ratio

The waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is used to assess central obesity, which is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Waist circumference is measured midway between the lower margin of the ribs and the iliac crest.

Thresholds from NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, UK) for adults with a BMI below 35 kg/m².
